The Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) was established in 2001 as part of the department of Mechanical Engineering of the University Of Western Macedonia (UOWM). It fosters collaboration among industry, government, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the public, addressing not only the complex interrelationships between energy and the environment, but also the technological, economic, and social aspects of sustainable energy development and use.

ETL's mission is to make significant innovative contributions to energy and environmental sustainability, including the improvement of technologies, structures, and policies that will lead to cleaner, more effective, efficient, and equitable products and processes.

ETL brings together collaborating faculty and departmental staff in carrying out multidisciplinary research that leads to holistic assessment of problems and solution options in meeting demand for energy, resource production and use and quality of life. There is a strong focus on engineering and science based activities in key technology, modeling and monitoring arenas.

ETL seeks to develop an integrated strategy to create and assess solution options in a holistic way, both in Greece and in Europe. Through its various programs/projects, it builds multidisciplinary teams that bring together UOWM's strengths in engineering and applied science in collaborative research to identify areas where innovative technology and policy have the greatest potential to reverse unsustainable trends.
